once upon a time...

a group of girls in pleated skirts and white see through blouses would sit together under a dangerous gum tree, with the threat of being attacked by branches and bird faeces at any moment. but this didn't faze them. not at all. they were too busy clutching tightly to a portion of a deck of cards, glancing over their hand to see what had been put down before them. whether it be the game 500, bridge, or bullshit. each game was equally as fierce, and each girl was equally as determined. nothing would deter them.

sammy stared towards the grimy dirt patch beneath the gum tree; no longer did perfectly manicured grass grow beneath the wild beast. instead, the quad had been abandoned, her teenage memories just that...a distant, fading memory.

laughter echoed in her ears, but could be heard no more. not when she tried again, so desparately, yearningly, to recall the girlish squeals. all that prevailed was silence.

the broken gravel, the concrete pathways, had become cracked over the years. looking down, sammy could see that her skin, once taut and firm, had wrinkled. eyes glistening, she looked towards the shady blue cloth, under which a gaggle of giggling girls could be seen holding stacks of books in their laps, pens gripped tightly in their hands. their eyes were skimming over the books, but they weren't really reading them, sammy could tell. they were just pretending.

so much time had passed. sammy didn't belong there anymore.

she wondered where that young group of girls, in pleated skirts and white see through blouses, had gone. what had happened to them?

it was another journey for another day.

a testimony to all the hsc students out there this year and last...and a memoir of our story
